My Story

Much like a leaf blowing in the wind, I floated through most of my life waiting for the “someday” when all things would fall into place and life would be everything I always wanted it to be.  Don’t get me wrong, I was successful in a lot of ways; at least according to the definition of success I was brought up to believe in. So, on paper life was great, but inside I felt unfulfilled, uninspired, bored and stressed out.  With so much focus on my career, I was lacking life balance. I didn’t do anything about that for a long time, though, because I was just too busy and distracted and, to be honest, I felt a bit guilty.  I had some good stress management tools and so many good things going for me I thought “I SHOULD be happy” so all things considered, I convinced myself, it wasn’t a big deal.  I settled, and put up with a lot.  Here is what I have learned about settling:

what you resist will persist.

Ignoring those feelings didn’t make them go away.  I tried to cover them up and do things to be happy and bring some excitement into my life; to try to fill up that space where joy, inspiration, and fulfillment were supposed to be.  I knew I needed change, I just didn’t know how, so I started randomly changing everything about my life including changing cities, countries, jobs, relationships, my diet and I even went back to school.

Like that leaf in the wind being pushed in every direction and no direction at all, I became unfocused, unclear and confused. My directionless actions landed me in debt, on EI and unable to find another job, lonely and heartbroken after a particularly unhealthy relationship, and suffering from depression and anxiety.  I guess you might call this time in my life my rock bottom in terms of my overall wellness.  Zero life balance!  I knew in order to get back on track with my life purpose, I needed to look at how I could do things differently and avoid making similar mistakes in my future.  This was my opportunity for a period of deep self-reflection and personal development.

Of all the lessons I learned over the years the most important was that I can’t do everything on my own.  I always saw myself as a strong independent woman, and never wanting to appear as weak or needy or have anyone think less of me I never asked for help.  I also needed to let go of my fear of being let down, disappointed or rejected by others; to build confidence. When I opened up to the possibility of connection and collaboration and was willing to admit that I didn’t have all the answers, that was when I had my first experience with a life coach.  Having a life coach allowed me to understand more about what I really, authentically, wanted (values and priorities) and allowed me to be clearer about my direction so I could take specific action steps that kept me on course.  My coach supported me when I got stuck, helped me overcome obstacles (including bad habits and self-defeating behaviours) and helped me get motivated when I wanted to procrastinate or quit pursuing my goals.

After a lot of self-exploration, personal development and support from others I have been able to realize the mistakes I made and do things differently and in a way that works.  Looking back now, if someone had told me that this (where I am now) would be my life one day there is JUST. NO. WAY. I would have believed them.  My journey to find life balance and pursue my life purpose has led me to being a catalyst for positive change in others and I am committed to sharing my experience, strength and hope to help keep others from taking that same lonely path I took.

Be Inspired

If I could share anything with the world it would be this: You are not limited by who you have always been or what you have always done.  It’s never too late to change and it’s entirely up to you. No one is going to do it for you and you can wait forever for things to change, unless you take the necessary steps to get you to where exactly it is you are going. In order to get there, though, you have to know where you WANT to go and you need support!  And to truly know what you want and what support you need, you have to know yourself.  Taking care of YOU is not selfish; in fact, I believe that putting yourself first is absolutely necessary to thrive and be fulfilled in life.

I know that we all have obstacles, and I believe our pains are quite similar, but it’s our solutions that make the ultimate difference and determine our success.  I also know that many of us struggle with clarity and motivation and that it’s often hard to find these things on our own.  No doubt it’s easier to stay the same than it is to grow but I know what that lack of clarity, self –awareness, confidence and support cost me; what is it costing you?  Is exactly what you have now truly good enough or do you want more for yourself and your life?    If you want more, I would love to support you in any way I can.
